In a Healthy Vein...blood will flow uncompromised when a person maintains a healthy lifestyle. Exercising regularly, a well-balanced diet, avoidance of drugs and alcohol as well as keeping stress to a minimum and quite frankly good genetics all contribute to healthy veins. In the optimal vein, blood will flow like it is in the image to the left. Here, we find that as the heart pumps, the blood flows regularly and evenly, but most importantly the valves and width of the vein is conducive to proper flow.

In a Varicose or 'Bad' Vein...Blood flow has become erratic even with a healthy heart and steady beat. Many issues can cause this type of vein: Prolonged standing and/or sitting, straining, obesity and in some cases pregnancy can cause varicose veins. Most people experience varicose veins due to hereditary traits from blood-related family members. In these 'bad' veins, as we see in the image to the right, the valves are damaged or diseased which prevents the proper backward flow of blood within the vein. The blood then begins to pool, distending the vein causing spider veins, varicose veins and a medical condition called vein disease or venous insufficiency. The high/low pressure system we typically experience every day in a healthy venous system has now been compromised and can cause many life changing vein problems. |
